Officer Darron Burks and Sr. Cpls. Karissa David and Jamie Farmer were shot Aug. 29.

Police officials and volunteers plan to hold a public barbecue fundraiser Thursday for the Dallas officers who were shot by a gunman last month in southeast Oak Cliff.

Officer Darron Burks and Sr. Cpls. Karissa David and Jamie Farmer were shot Aug. 29 near the For Oak Cliff community center in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. Burks, a former math teacher, died. Farmer was treated and released from the hospital after a short time. David is still recovering in the hospital.

The Thursday fundraiser, organized by the Assist the Officer Foundation and Operation BBQ Relief, will take place from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Dallas Police Association headquarters at 1412 Griffin St. E in Dallas, according to a news release. The organizers suggested a $10 donation per barbecue plate.

Burks was fatally shot by a gunman about 10 p.m. as he sat in his patrol vehicle, which Chief Eddie García called a “premeditated execution.” David and Farmer responded to check on Burks and were also shot. The gunman was chased by police to Lewisville, where multiple Dallas officers fatally shot him.

David was shot in the face and abdomen and is now blind in both eyes, the news release by the Assist the Officer Foundation said. She was wed just six weeks before the shooting, according to the news release.

David has endured multiple surgeries and has “a long road to recovery ahead of her,” the news release said, adding that her family wants to thank the community for its prayers and words of support.
