Dallas-Fort Worth set for the hottest days of the summer through the weekend

Highs in the triple digits are in the forecast Thursday through the weekend, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Grant Johnston.

Updated at 4:15 p.m Thursday: Revised to include an excessive heat warning for Dallas-Fort Worth.

The dog days of summer are here.

Highs in the triple digits are in the forecast through the weekend, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Grant Johnston.

“But it will feel more like 105 to 110 with that humidity, so some serious heat,” Johnston said. “Don’t overdo it outside.”

The National Weather Service had previously issued a heat advisory for all of North Texas, including the Dallas-Fort Worth area, through Friday evening.

But with heat index values expected to reach up to 110 degrees, the weather service upgraded that advisory to an excessive heat warning. Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties will be under the warning through 7 p.m. Saturday. Collin County is not under the warning, but it is under a heat advisory.

The last time an excessive heat warning was issued for Dallas-Fort Worth was July 22, 2018, according to Jason Godwin, a weather service meteorologist. That warning was issued during a heat wave when Dallas-Fort Worth saw highs up to 109 degrees, Godwin said.

The combination of high temperatures and high humidity could increase the risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for those who work outdoors or are participating in activities outside, the weather service cautioned.

The weather service advised North Texans to stay hydrated, stay out of the sun, and, if possible, to reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to the morning or evening hours.

In July, the Salvation Army opened 13 cooling stations across North Texas, offering a place to escape the heat as well as cold water bottles. The sites are taking extra measures to ensure social distancing, the use of masks and sanitation.

Dallas-Fort Worth on Thursday recorded its fourth 100-degree day of the year, with an official high of 101 degrees at DFW International Airport. Normally by now North Texas has seen at least a week’s worth of 100-degree days, according to the weather service.

Although North Texas is in for a scorching weekend, there is some good news on the horizon.

“Hang in there. It looks like there will be some relief coming,” Johnston said. “But the next few days here [will be] awfully hot.”

A weak front is expected to move through North Texas by Sunday, which will bring high temperatures back into the mid-90s, according to Jason Dunn, a weather service meteorologist. Thanks to that front, temperatures next week should say below the century mark, he said.

The first two weeks of August are historically the hottest days of the year in North Texas, according to the weather service. Toward the end of the month, temperatures gradually start to drop as fall approaches.
