Thunderstorms possible Thursday in parts of North Texas, forecast to clear up by weekend

A flood watch in Dallas County was extended to Friday for areas along the Trinity River, where minor flooding is expected.

Showers — which may be heavy in some areas — are expected to continue into Thursday before mostly clearing up Friday.

The heaviest rainfall and highest flood potential will be in the afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, with some areas forecast to see 4 inches of rain or more. Some storms may be severe, particularly for areas along and north of Interstate 20.

“We could see another round of storms [Thursday], late in the morning and continuing until the rain dissipates late in the day,” Juan Hernandez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, said in an interview Wednesday afternoon.

The stormy weather may include thunderstorms after 1 p.m., with temperatures reaching 87 degrees. Highs are expected to rise once the rain leaves the area, Hernandez said.

A flood watch was issued for much of North and Central Texas through Thursday evening; rain totals are expected to reach 1 to 3 inches. In Dallas County, a flood watch was extended to Friday morning for areas along the Trinity River, where low-water crossings are expected to see minor flooding.

There is a low chance of thunderstorms Friday and Saturday, according to the weather service. Some isolated storm activity will occur, possibly becoming severe. Additional isolated storms are possible early next week.

The weekend is expected to be hot and humid — highs will range from the upper 80s to the middle 90s. The high humidity will make it feel hotter, according to NWS Fort Worth, and the afternoon heat index is projected to be in the mid-90s with a high of 105 degrees.

“If anyone is going to be outdoors for the holiday weekend, make sure you are staying hydrated,” Hernandez said.
