Following the destructive storms across North Texas last month, two centers are opening in Dallas County for residents seeking financial aid.
The disaster recovery centers opened by FEMA will offer in-person assistance to homeowners and renters impacted by the storms, high winds and power outages, according to a news release from county officials.
The severe storms brought hail and lightning, downed trees, damaged property and at one point left more than half a million Oncor customers without power.
The deadline for residents to apply for FEMA assistance is July 16. FEMA opened the centers in Garland and Richardson in coordination with the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the county and its cities.
Some volunteer organizations that respond to disasters will also be available, Dallas County Judge Clay Lewis Jenkins said in a written statement Friday.
The centers opened Saturday with hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. The Garland center is at Williams Elementary School at 1821 Oldgate Lane and the Richardson center is at Network of Community Ministries at 1500 International Parkway in Suite 300.
The centers are accessible to people with disabilities and have assistive technology, the news release said. Anyone in need of a reasonable accommodation or sign language interpreter should call 833-285-7448 and, if needed, press 2 for Spanish.
Visiting the centers isn’t required to apply for FEMA assistance and residents may call 800-621-3362 between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., visit DisasterAssistance.gov or download the FEMA app.
