Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey’s jury duty is just what we needed

In a rough season for football and politics, he’s reminding us of something deeper.

Between presidential politics and a blah start to the Dallas Cowboys season, we sure needed something to revive our civic spirit and restore some pride in the silver and blue.

We just didn’t know we would get both in one story.

This sentiment is normally reserved for Sunday afternoons, but thank goodness for Brandon Aubrey.

The Cowboys kicker, and Plano’s own, is showing us all what it means to put our duty as citizens first. In case you missed the news, Aubrey is currently serving on a jury in a felony trial in Tarrant County. This week, he practiced when his day in court was done.

We don’t have any insight into his thinking on the matter. All we really know is that he got picked and he served.

We do know that there are a hundred ways to wiggle out of jury service. Some of us could go pro in the field. So we assume Aubrey could have figured something out if he wanted to. And the Cowboys apparently were ready to help him do so.

For those who haven’t been following the Cowboys this season, first, you aren’t missing much. But what you might be missing is one of the most elite kickers in the game today. As our Cowboys Insider David Moore has reported, “Aubrey has been the Cowboys’ most consistent and productive player through the first six games.”

We appreciate the sense of confidence that three points are on the way every time Aubrey steps up behind the snapper. But Aubrey’s stellar performance on the field is more in the area of our colleagues on the Sports desk.

Here on the editorial board, we’re grateful when someone who has a certain celebrity shows up to serve in ways that remind us we all need to chip in and do our part for society.

It sure makes Aubrey’s bright star shine just a little brighter.
