Letters to the Editor — Three cheers for poll workers, coach Steve Sarkisian, Aggie band

Readers appreciate the work of poll workers; call Steve Sarkisian a leader; and praise the Aggie Band.

1 Poll workers — Kudos to the brave election poll workers who stepped up to work the elections, given the uncertainty of their safety in today’s political environment. These patriots ensure the basic right to vote is available in their neighborhoods or hometowns.

The fact that many of the poll workers are senior citizens makes their decision to show up and work the polls even more commendable. We should be thankful these workers recognize the right and need for elections in our democracy and serve as integral parts in our democratic process. Thank you all for your civic contribution.

Earlier in the game when some supporters of the Longhorns got out of control and threw bottles onto the playing field, Sarkisian immediately made a beeline across the field, waving his arms and getting it stopped. That’s what a real leader does.

3 Aggie Band — Re: Three cheers for the Mustang Band,” by Robert Cooper, Oct. 5 Letters.

I’m an old Aggie who has lost most of his appetite for college and professional football, especially with the injury list increasing during the past 10 years. However, I used to enjoy watching the halftime performances by many of the universities. As Cooper notes, the broadcast hosts often rattle on about certain highs or lows of the first half of the game and block the ability of television viewers from seeing the quality performances of many student bands.

I was a member of the Aggie Band when it expanded to about 320 marchers years ago. It now is about 450 students going through intricate formations while playing their instruments and not tripping into each other. These students give significant time and energy to make the performance look smooth and easy. They deserve viewing by television audiences.
