Tornado aftermath with a smile

Recently I was covering tornado destruction aftermath in Sherman, Texas when I overheard kids laughing in a neighborhood that was partially devastated. I followed the splashes and saw a home where the majority of a roof was missing. I saw numerous young boys jumping from a diving board and playing catch with a wet t-shirt. I asked them if this was their home and one boy told me it was his grandmother's.

Before asking the grandmother if I could photograph the boys playing, I told her how sorry I was for her loss. After forty years of covering news it’s hard for me to comprehend the resilience people have after losing their property and sometimes loved ones. She thanked me and said I could stay as long as I wanted with a smile. I found the irony in kids playing as if nothing had happened.
