How to watch Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers and Stars games

The Mavericks, Rangers and Stars are all undergoing significant changes in how their games are broadcast.

For the last handful of years, the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers had their games broadcasted on Bally Sports Southwest.

All of that has changed. Even with the rise of streaming services, the way to watch Dallas Cowboys games has even been altered (depending on which day of the week they play).

But Diamond Sports Group, the owner of Bally Sports, has gone bankrupt and caused the Rangers, Stars and Mavericks to find a broadcast partner elsewhere. Bally Sports is no more, as Diamond Sports Group has rebranded the network to FanDuel Sports Network.

Here’s how to watch each of the local professional sports teams’ games.

Dallas Mavericks

On August 23, the NBA announced that 13 teams had finalized contracts with Bally’s parent company, Diamond Sports Group, but that the Mavericks and New Orleans had decided not to renew with Bally.

The Mavericks reached a deal with TEGNA Inc. to broadcast games free to viewers. Those with North Texas cable, satellite and streaming providers will have free access to Mavs games.

At least 70 games that are not scheduled to be exclusively broadcasted nationally will broadcast on TEGNA’s KFAA (Channel 29). That channel used to be KMPX, a Spanish station. Starting on October 20, Channel 29′s new programming begins. Of the 70 or more games airing on Channel 29 and 13 stations across Texas, at least 15 will be simulcast on WFAA (Channel 8).

The following TV providers will have access to Channel 29: AT&T U-verse TV; Charter Spectrum; DIRECTV; DISH; Frontier Fiber Keller; Fubo; GEUS; Grande Communications, OneSource Communications and Optimum.

If you do not have any of those providers, a digital antenna can solve that problem. One can be purchased for $25-$55.

There’s another piece of the puzzle: A streaming app. The Mavericks announced the new service Monday, and it will initially will be powered through the NBA’s Next Gen platform, inside the NBA app. A Mavs-specific app, called MavsTV, will launch later this season. The service is subject to regional streaming restrictions.

The streaming service will broadcast all the Mavericks’ non-exclusively nationally televised games, albeit for a price. It will cost $124.99 for a season-long pass and $14.99 for a monthly subscription. Fans can sign up at this link: mavs.com/mavstv.

Dallas Stars

The Stars cut ties with Bally Sports and decided to take matters into their own hands.

They launched an app called Victory+, a first-of-its-kind service for in-market fans to watch games free of charge and direct-to-consumer. The app was created by A Parent Media Co. Inc. and was launched in September.

The team agreed to a seven-year deal to broadcast its games for free on the app and will generate revenue through APMC’s advertising model. All Stars fans in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas will have access to Victory+ to watch the games. Blackout restrictions apply for the out-of-market fans, but they can access Stars games through ESPN+.

The user-friendly app is available on all Roku, Apple iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and web streaming services. Victory+ recently announced the app is coming soon on Vizio, Vidaa, LG, Samsung and AppleTV. You can download the app by typing “victoryplus” into the search bar of each device’s app store or by going to victoryplus.com.

All you have to do is sign up for a free account and you’ll have access to Stars games.

Sixty-nine of the Stars’ 82 regular-season games will be carried on Victory+, as well as the first round of the playoffs.

Victory+ will also house all Stars media content, including interviews, classic games and more featured content with the Stars. The Anaheim Ducks have also signed onto the venture with the Stars and their games will be streamed on Victory+ as well (though only for people in that market).

Texas Rangers

Unlike the Stars and Mavericks, the Rangers don’t yet have a solution.

That’s partly because, well, the Rangers have a little bit more time to figure things out.

It was announced in early October that the Rangers were leaving Diamond Sports Group. While the MLB announced it was going to take over production of some teams’ games, the Rangers decided to take their own path.

The release said the Rangers “have determined that they will no longer be partnering with Diamond Sports Group and are considering their local media options for the 2025 season.”

So what are the Rangers’ options? The Dallas Morning News reported in September the club is pursuing the idea of creating its own Region Sports Network, which would be a more lucrative option than turning things over to the MLB.

Texas doesn’t yet have an agreement for anything, but the hope is to encompass cable/satellite and streaming options for fans in the new RSN. The Rangers could also negotiate a deal with local TV stations in the area for a broadcast package, similar to what the Mavericks did.

Stay tuned to find out what the Rangers do.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys’ games aren’t hard to find.

Either FOX or CBS carries each Cowboys game, unless Dallas is playing on Monday Night Football or Thursday Night Football. Monday Night Football is broadcast on ESPN.

The only tricky one is when they take the field for Thursday Night Football. Those games are streamed live on Amazon Prime Video. Luckily, that shouldn’t be an issue the rest of the 2024 season, as the Cowboys beat the Giants on Thursday Night Football and don’t play in that weekly NFL feature again this year.
