Decision day for the Cowboys and Dak Prescott is quickly approaching.

The NFL deadline for any player who has been franchise-tagged to finalize a multiyear contract is at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Prescott, who the Cowboys hit with the exclusive franchise tag, has until then to agree to a deal with the Cowboys.

However, whether the Cowboys and their star quarterback will agree to terms by then appears to be in question.

A source told The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins that the Cowboys are “not close” to reaching a multi-year deal with Prescott.

Prescott, who threw for a career-high 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns last season, is seeking a four-year deal, while the team is offering a five-year contract. A source said the Cowboys offered Prescott a contract that would come second to Russell Wilson ($35 million) in terms of average salary per year. The Cowboys also presented Prescott a deal that would surpass the most guaranteed money for a quarterback. The Rams’ Jared Goff has the most guaranteed money in the NFL at $110 million.

If the Cowboys are unable to reach a deal with Prescott, he’ll become the first quarterback in franchise history to play under the franchise tag.

Under his signed franchise tag, he is scheduled to earn $31.4 million in 2020.
