Jerry Jones: Calling Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch ‘injury prone’ would be unfair

Vander Esch will miss several games with an injury for the second consecutive season.

For the second straight season, Vander Esch will miss several games with an injury.

But to call him “injury prone” would be unfair, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday.

Jones discussed the 2018 first-round pick before Vander Esch underwent collarbone surgery. The procedure went well, a source said Tuesday, and optimism surrounds his recovery. He entered the operation carrying a six-to-eight week timetable.

Vander Esch missed nine games last season before January neck surgery. His collarbone injury came in the first quarter of Sunday’s game.

“Having the injury that he’s got right now is just bad luck,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “We’ve seen it, and you do see it in football. … No, I don’t think he’s injury prone. I think he plays a tough, physical position, and he’s going to have injuries that he deals with.”
