Cowboys LT Brandon Knight has knee surgery, will be out at least a couple of weeks

The loss of Knight means the Cowboys will have their third different left tackle start in a game for the 2020 season

The Cowboys received more bad news for the patched up offensive line when coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday left tackle Brandon Knight will miss a couple of weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Knight suffered the injury on the last offensive play of Monday’s 38-10 loss to the Cardinals. It was a non-contact injury as Knight was blocking a defender and then started limping.

Knight was checked out by the training staff when the game ended and then walked to the locker room.

The loss of Knight means the Cowboys will have their third different left tackle start in a game this season. The Cowboys will also have their fourth different starting offensive line when they face Washington on Sunday.

Tyron Smith, the starting Pro Bowl left tackle, is out for the season after neck surgery. With Knight out, the Cowboys do have some options.

Cam Erving, the projected swing tackle, is close to returning from injured reserve after knee surgery. What complicates Erving’s return is more than his knee. Erving was dealing with the flu before Monday’s game and his status remains unsettled.

On Oct. 6, the Cowboys signed tackle Greg Senat off the Browns' practice squad, so he’s another possibility. However, Senat has never had an offensive snap since the Ravens drafted him in the sixth round of the 2018 draft. Senat played on 10 special teams snaps in two games this season.

The Cowboys could move left guard Connor Williams to tackle, a position he played at Texas. There are also four tackles on the practice squad.

Pro Bowl right guard Zack Martin is in concussion protocol and it’s unknown if he’ll be cleared for Sunday’s game against Washington. Martin was hit in the head by running back Ezekiel Elliott during a run in the first quarter and didn’t return.

If Martin is unable to play, Connor McGovern will take over at right guard.

“I think you have to look at all your capabilities,” McCarthy said. “But you know me well enough now, I think it’s important for us to try to get some continuity. If Zack can’t go, then obviously Connor McGovern will go there and then we’ve just got to figure out the left tackle position. That’ll start [Wednesday].”

Long touchdown run was humble pie: Arizona sealed the victory on running back Kenyan Drake’s 69-yard run in the fourth quarter. Drake went untouched as he ran through the heart of the defense.

Inside linebacker Jaylon Smith used an expletive to describe his feeling about the touchdown. McCarthy said the Cowboys ate some humble pie.

“I mean when you break it down, it’s really the fit,” he said. “Trust me, I didn’t like, no one liked it, especially the way the night went. For it to end like that was just another bite of humble pie, there. You look at it and it’s just the fit wasn’t right and we were a little over zealous on the playside and he cut it back and hit it. At the end of the day, it comes down to gap integrity consistency there.”

Briefly: The Cowboys released DB Saivion Smith and WR Ventell Bryant to clear roster spots for Gregory and possibly another player. The Cowboys have one available spot on the 53-man roster.
