Stephen Jones says he’s very confident that Cowboys QB Dak Prescott will start vs. Vikings

The Dallas EVP also provided injury updates on Tyron Smith, Michael Gallup and DeMarcus Lawrence.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones recently joined the G-Bag Nation on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] to discuss all things Cowboys (17:11). Here are some of the highlights, edited for clarity:

How likely is it that Dak Prescott (calf strain) plays next week against Minnesota?

Stephen Jones: “We’re very confident. If you’re like me, which most people are now and that are Cowboys fans, you learn never to bet against Dak. Confident. He feels like he’s going to be playing. Like I said, I wouldn’t bet against him and feel confident that he’s going to do what he needs to do to get himself ready to play.”

Contrasting this team with your 2016 squad, it seems like something magical is going on?

Jones: “Well, I agree with you. Though I think the biggest difference is the maturity of the young team. It starts with Dak [Prescott] right at the top. He was beyond his years as a rookie when he stepped in here and took Tony [Romo’s] place and dragged that rookie class with him, [Ezekiel Elliott] and that crew, and just stepped up and had natural leadership ability, the whole group did. I think they’re doing that in spades again. We’re a young team. I continue to see where we’re one of the five youngest teams in the league, if not three, if not the top three in terms of the youth. But, I just think there are some similarities, but a lot of those young players who were making plays for us in that year are now four years down the road, more mature, and playing great football.”

How did Tyron Smith’s neck do after the Patriots game?

Jones: “He was outstanding. He had no issues in the game, no setbacks, and feels better than he’s felt in years in terms of how he feels physically. And, of course, as we all see, when he’s feeling good, he’s the best in the business in our mind and playing at a real, high level.”

Will Michael Gallup practice next week? What’s the latest on DeMarcus Lawrence’s recovery?

Jones: “We’ll make all those decisions as they come at us. He certainly has an opportunity, Gallup does, to work back in practice. I do think D-Law is going to be a little longer before he’s able to start practicing again. So, again, the great news about all of this is we can, you know, make good, sound decisions because we do have players that are stepping up. I think that obviously on the defensive side we put a lot of resources, a lot of effort, whether it’s draft picks or money into beefing up the defensive side of the ball. And, of course, we have some players that are playing at a higher level than they did last year. So, we’ll move forward and make what’s in the best interest of each individual player and certainly knowing that we’re fortunate right now we have guys who are filling in and playing at a real high level for us right now.”
