DENVER — The Cowboys opened the preseason with their first-round pick and the man he’s battling for a starting job both in the starting lineup Saturday night against the Broncos.
Tyler Smith, the first-round pick, started at left guard and Connor McGovern, a 2019 third-round selection, got the right guard gig.
Both players received 33 offensive snaps during the contest.
During training camp practices Smith and McGovern rotated at left guard. McGovern would usually begin team drills ahead of Smith. The goal is to get McGovern ready to play both guard positions and for Smith to take over as the starting left guard when the season begins.
Toward the end of training camp, McGovern and Smith each got reps with the first-team offense.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in a pregame radio interview with 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM)that Smith and McGovern will not switch positions during the game.
Stephen Jones also said the Cowboys wanted Smith to get plenty of work against the Broncos.
Smith was flagged twice for holding calls and apparently missed a block on a Cooper Rush pass that was intercepted.
