Dallas Cowboys host 7 players for workouts, including trio of QBs

Of the seven players, three were quarterbacks and another three were wide receivers.

While the Cowboys’ upper management has been optimistic about an early return for quarterback Dak Prescott, the team is preparing for him to be out a little bit longer.

The Cowboys hosted seven players for workouts at The Star in Frisco on Wednesday, three of which were quarterbacks: Case Cookus, J’Mar Smith and Reid Sinnett. Joining the trio of quarterbacks was a trio of receivers in John Hightower, SMU product Reggie Roberson and Ra’Shaun Henry, as well as linebacker Charles Snowden.

Cookus has had stops with the Vikings, Raiders, Giants and Broncos. He also played for the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL. Smith had a stint with the Patriots and also has USFL experience with the Birmingham Stallions. Sinnet had stints with the Buccaneers, Dolphins and Eagles.

The Cowboys waived undrafted free agent wide receiver Dennis Houston, who played in the first two games, on Tuesday. Houston caught two passes for 16 yards in two games, both coming in the season opener. He cleared waivers and re-signed with the practice squad on Wednesday.

The move opened a spot on the 53-man roster which could pave the way for numerous transactions this week.

No. 3 quarterback Will Grier, tight end Sean McKeon and tackle Jason Peters are possible candidates to move from the practice squad to the 53. Practice squad players can be moved just three times to the 53-man roster. Grier, who was active last week, has two more elevations remaining.

The release of Houston also opens the door for wide receiver Michael Gallup (knee) to become active for Monday’s game against the Giants. Gallup was inactive the first two games of the season recovering from surgery. Rookie third-round pick, wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, inactive the first two weeks, is another player with the possibility of becoming active for the Giants game.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said in his press conference Wednesday that Gallup will receive “every opportunity” to be ready to play by Monday night and get a full slate of practice reps during the week.
