Cowboys WR Michael Gallup undergoes arthroscopic procedure in right knee, ankle

The plan is for Gallup to be a full participant in Dallas’ spring workout program.

An important season is ahead for Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup.

On Tuesday, he underwent an arthroscopic procedure that allows him the best chance to be healthy for it.

Gallup had his right knee and right ankle both scoped, two people with knowledge of the session said Tuesday. Despite the minimally-invasive meniscus repair and ankle clean-up, the plan is for Gallup to be a full participant when the Cowboys formally reconvene in April for the start of their spring workout program.

Last year, Gallup missed the first three games because of an ACL tear to his left knee. He caught a touchdown in his Week 4 return against the Washington Commanders but was unable to find a consistent rhythm over the course of the year.

Gallup finished the regular season with 34 catches for 424 yards — a career-low 10.9 yards per reception — and four touchdowns. He caught a touchdown in a playoff win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was held without a reception on three targets during a Jan. 22 playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, including a pass from quarterback Dak Prescott that was thrown late and intercepted.

Tuesday’s procedure adds context to Gallup’s season.

When healthy, Gallup can stretch defenses with his speed and contested-catch ability. He signed a five-year, $57.5 million contract last March, and his $11 million salary for 2023 is fully guaranteed.

The Cowboys have a decision to make with Gallup in 2024. His $8.5 million salary that year will be fully guaranteed if still on the roster by a March 2024 deadline. His salary amount is not too imposing, particularly as the salary cap continues a rapid growth, but a rebound 2023 season can erase any questions about his future with the franchise.

The hope is that Tuesday’s procedure is a start in that direction.
