What did Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy say about recent violations of NFL’s gambling policy?

The league’s investigation of Colts CB Isaiah Rodgers put the policy in the spotlight.

FRISCO — The NFL is investigating Indianapolis cornerback and kick returner Isaiah Rodgers for a possible violation of the league’s gambling policy.

The league announced suspensions for five players — four of them with the Detroit Lions — earlier this offseason for violations.

All of this comes after former Atlanta receiver Calvin Ridley, who is now with Jacksonville, was suspended for an entire season.

Mike McCarthy was asked if these incidents have been used as a point of emphasis, a sort of cautionary tale, with the players.

“Gambling and all these topics, they’re always at the forefront,’’ the Cowboys head coach said. “I mean your continuing education process is always at the forefront.

“Continuing education as a whole around the National Football League in the last 15 years, I think it’s been outstanding. I think we talk so much as a league about things we need to do better and we don’t recognize the things they’ve done a great job of…you know, the football, on the field activities, training, player safety. I mean the game is safer today clearly than it was five years ago, clearly 10 years ago.

“There’s been so much great progress that’s (been) made. But unfortunately, when things go wrong, it’s a healthy reminder to all of us.’’
