Jerry, Stephen Jones break down why Cowboys decided to trade for QB Trey Lance

What plans do the Cowboys have for the former 49ers signal caller?

The Cowboys’ trade for Trey Lance left many wondering what the franchise is planning to do with the young quarterback. Jerry and Stephen Jones spoke to reporters before the team’s preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders to provide some insight on the move.

Jerry Jones began by discussing how adding Lance strengthens the quarterback position and makes for an “ideal” situation for Dak Prescott. The Cowboys owner and general manager said getting a young signal caller is part of building a roster and that the franchise may have taken Jalen Hurts if he hung around a while longer in the 2020 NFL draft.

“[Lance] gives us an opportunity to do what we always like to be doing,” Jerry Jones said. “It would be ideal with Dak to have a young, prospective, developing quarterback who could just be in the room and be on the team with him.”

Does adding Lance impact contract extension talks for Prescott? According to Jerry Jones, not exactly. The owner added that Prescott’s extension outlook didn’t cross his mind when the team made the trade.

Stephen Jones said the team “absolutely” expects to re-sign Prescott to a long-term deal. The veteran quarterback has two years left on his four-year, $160 million contract.
