Cowboys owner Jerry Jones praises Texas RB Jonathon Brooks ahead of Day 2 of NFL draft

The former Longhorns star is one of many players Dallas could target in the second and third rounds.

The first night of the NFL draft provided additional ammunition for the Dallas Cowboys.

A trade down from No. 24 before selecting Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton handed the Cowboys an additional third-round pick, meaning Dallas is set to go on the clock three times Friday evening in the second and third rounds.

Who might the Cowboys target on Day 2? If the post-draft press conference Thursday night at The Star said anything, it was that Dallas is still very interested in former Texas running back Jonathon Brooks.

“In my thirty years, I thought it was the best interview that I’ve ever interviewed with a player,” said team owner and general manager Jerry Jones. “He’s just outstanding. He’s a great football player. We’ve got him high, high, high. And he’s a good player.”

Brooks, who is coming off a torn ACL, had been tied to the Cowboys in many mock drafts leading up to this week and was a prospect who made an official draft visit to Frisco to meet with team officials.

“I would echo Jerry’s thoughts. I got to sit with him, as well. He’s outstanding and certainly I think he’s working his tail off to get that knee [healthy],” said Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Stephen Jones also noted how Brooks had been working through his rehab alongside his former Longhorns teammate DeMarvion Overshown, a Cowboys draft pick in 2023 who missed last season after suffering his own torn ACL.

Without making a trade up in the third round, Dallas will not be on the clock until the 56th overall pick, and Brooks may not still be on the board.

“And [he’s] one of several great players that are still left in this draft,” Cowboys vice president of personnel Will McClay jokingly reminded everyone of at the conclusion of the Jones family’s answers.
