Dallas Cowboys remain hopeful as CeeDee Lamb’s contract holdout officially begins

Looking to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid WRs, Lamb is subject to fines totaling $50,000 per day.

OXNARD, Calif. — CeeDee Lamb’s contract holdout officially started Wednesday. The Cowboys receiver enters the final year of his contract scheduled to make $17.9 million as part of his fifth-year option.

Contract talks have gone slow between Lamb and the team leading to this holdout. Lamb is subject to fines totaling $50,000 per day. Lamb also faces additional fines for one week’s base salary (1/18th of salary) for each preseason game missed.

The Cowboys are hopeful this holdout won’t become long. Lamb is seeking to become one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. The highest average salary in the NFL at wide receiver is Justin Jefferson’s $35 million.

This offseason, Jefferson signed a four-year, $140 million deal worth $110 million guaranteed, resetting the receiver market. Jefferson’s deal surpassed the Eagles’ A.J. Brown. A few months before Jefferson signed his deal, Brown signed a three-year extension worth $84 million guaranteed, which at that time was the highest guaranteed money given to a wide receiver. Brown has the same agent as Lamb in Tory Dandy.

It’s the second consecutive year the Cowboys have dealt with a holdout. Guard Zack Martin held out of training camp before getting a contract restructure that gave him a raise of over $9 million.

The Cowboys are also in talks with quarterback Dak Prescott for a contract extension. He’s in the final year of a four-year contract that will pay him $29 million this season. Prescott has a whopping $55.1 million cap hit this year, the second-highest in the NFL.
