Now fully healthy, Cowboys’ Jourdan Lewis focused on impact, improvement going into 2024

After recovering from a career-threatening foot injury, Lewis was a key contributor for the Cowboys last season.

OXNARD, Calif. — Cowboys slot cornerback Jourdan Lewis is appreciative he doesn’t have to rehab anymore.

Last year, Lewis was coming off a career-threatening right foot injury that cost him the majority of the 2022 season. Lewis responded in rehab the entire offseason, and despite missing the preseason and the 2023 regular-season opener, he played 16 games with eight starts.

The Cowboys’ players rewarded Lewis, voting him the team’s Ed Block Courage award winner, given to the player who overcomes adversity.

Lewis is completely healthy now entering this 2024 season.

On the team, Lewis is one of the more durable players. In his first five seasons, 2017-2021, he played 77 of 81 games. The injury in 2022 forced him to play in six games.

That’s all behind him now.

“I got to train my movements and do DB stuff and focus on making sure the foot is stronger and of out there and do your stuff and perform,” Lewis said. “And get better at different aspects of the game that you want to and not thinking about rehab.”

In 2023, Lewis had one interception, five pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He made his biggest impact toward the end of the season where in the last five games he had two pass breakups, a forced fumble and fumble recovery along with an INT. He also had a season-high six tackles against Detroit.

The finish to the 2023 season and knowing he’s completely healthy has given Lewis comfort he’ll play better this upcoming season.

“Train how I want to and I’ll be ready for Day 1 of training camp and getting my head wrapped around that,” he said. “That hadn’t happened for a while, just understanding that you know it’s going to be full go as soon as I get (to Thursday’s first training camp practice). Just getting ready for that and make sure my body is right and my mind is right to go out there and perform.”
