Cowboys-Ravens offers look at career similarities between Mike McCarthy, John Harbaugh

The Week 3 showdown at AT&T Stadium will be the fifth between McCarthy and Harbaugh.

FRISCO — Week 3 of the NFL season brings us another Mike McCarthy-John Harbaugh meeting.

With the Cowboys and Ravens facing off Sunday, an opportunity arises to examine a few similarities between both coaches’ careers. McCarthy and Harbaugh go into the matchup with win percentages in the same neighborhood and coaching career lengths separated by just one year (McCarthy has led NFL teams for 18 years, while Harbaugh has 17 years under his belt).

Each head coach also secured a Super Bowl win in Year 5 of their respective careers.

“I have a ton of respect for John and the job that he’s done there. I think consistency is the thing that jumps out to me,” McCarthy said Wednesday.

The Cowboys coach told reporters that he’s a big fan of the Harbaugh family. It’ll be the second time Dallas faces one of the Harbaugh brothers in 2024, taking on Jim’s Los Angeles Chargers in their preseason finale in August.

Sunday’s meeting will mark the fifth between McCarthy and John Harbaugh. The all-time series between the coaches currently sits at 2-2, with John Harbaugh winning the last two matchups. That includes a 34-17 win over the Cowboys in 2020.

“I think when you play John’s team, they’re — we go back to the competitions we had in the past when I was in Green Bay,” McCarthy said. “They play the same way and I think his background in special teams has been a big plus for his team. You’re going to be challenged in all three phases.”

Like the Cowboys, Harbaugh’s Ravens are looking to regroup from a Week 2 loss. Baltimore enters the Week 3 contest with an 0-2 record, falling to the Chiefs and Raiders to start the season.
