FRISCO — Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy wasn’t in a playful mood on Monday. Who can blame him?
The Cowboys were beaten, 28-25, on Sunday by the Ravens and the final score isn’t a true account of what transpired.
“Just like anything. I’m not going to get into specifics,” McCarthy said of his message to the team. “This isn’t show and tell. It’s about being accountable. We didn’t have a whole lot of time to spend on corrections, so we did that in the beginning part of (meetings) and we went right into the Giants.”
McCarthy said the team installed first, second and third down packages during Monday’s walkthrough session. He offered no clarity on running back Dalvin Cook’s possible elevation from the practice squad and said this about an evaluation of the defensive line: “I can’t give you evaluations. Actually, we didn’t go through grading evaluation today so I don’t have the one-on-one evaluations.”
McCarthy did praise the work of defensive tackle Mazi Smith, who participated in the game with a sore lower back.
McCarthy did offer the team needed to improve its completion percentage, something that falls on him as play caller and quarterback Dak Prescott.
At the end of his news conference, McCarthy was asked if the team understands where it stands with a 1-2 mark heading into Thursday’s game at the New York Giants.
“I talk to them every day,” he said. “I have a team meeting every day. I have an opportunity obviously to talk to the offense more. We understand where we are: we’re 1-2. We have our first division game in front of us.”
With that, the news conference was over and McCarthy went back to work.
