Stephen Jones reiterates belief Mike McCarthy can guide Cowboys through growing pains

Jones also maintained faith that Mike Zimmer will have Dallas’ defense competing at a high level.

Shortly after the Cowboys fell to Baltimore on Sunday, Mike McCarthy said his team is experiencing some growing pains.

Through three weeks of the season, Dallas hasn’t found offensive consistency and has struggled to slow down run-first teams in its last two games. While making his Monday appearance on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM), Stephen Jones reiterated his belief in the head coach.

“That’s why we hired Mike in the first place,” Jones said. “He’s got a resume that shows that he gets the job done as a head coach. Mike’s coached championship-caliber teams, he’s won Super Bowls, he’s been in several championship games and feel like he can get the job done for us.”

Jones also maintained his belief that Mike Zimmer will have Dallas’ defense competing at a high level.

The Cowboys are looking to break out of the rough patch when they face the New York Giants on Thursday night. The NFC East bout could give the team another opportunity to evaluate key positions like the running back committee.

Speaking to reporters after Sunday’s game at AT&T Stadium, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he likes the team’s personnel and doesn’t see any changes at this time. Stephen Jones echoed that sentiment.

“I think the biggest thing is, obviously people want to point out, I’ll go right to it, our running game. But when you get behind like we’ve gotten the last few games, it’s hard to really evaluate our running game when you’re down two-plus scores most of the game,” Stephen Jones said. “Obviously you get into a mode where you’re having to hurry up and throw the ball. You don’t really get to evaluate what you have.”

Stephen Jones emphasized how important it’ll be for the Cowboys to put themselves in a position where they aren’t trailing.
