Raiders star WR Davante Adams wants a trade. That doesn’t mean he’s coming to Dallas

Adams has requested a trade from the Raiders, and inevitably his name has been attached to the Cowboys. But nothing indicates the pair would even be a good fit.

FRISCO ― Davante Adams will be on the move soon.

That doesn’t mean he’ll land in Dallas.

It should be clear by now that any star player who wants a trade or hits the free agent market will inevitably be tied to the Cowboys. Jerry Jones wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s on brand.

But precious few of these speculative pairings come to fruition. Adams is simply the latest player to have his name bandied about when it comes to the Cowboys.

Don’t bandy. The club has no intention of taking part in the Adams sweepstakes, a person with knowledge of the Cowboys’ thinking told The Dallas Morning News.

Could Dallas use an offensive upgrade?

Sure. Adams would have a positive impact, even though running back is a greater need on that side of the ball. But acquiring Adams wouldn’t address the team’s most pressing needs in a cost-efficient manner.

Stop rolling your eyes. This isn’t an argument that the organization lacks the money to pay Adams. It could. The question is this: Is it a judicious use of cap space going forward?

Dak Prescott is the NFL’s highest-paid player going into next season. CeeDee Lamb will be the league’s second-highest paid non-quarterback. Now add Adams, who counts $44.1 million against the cap in each of the next two seasons.

Does it make fiscal sense to pour that much money into two positions when building a team? If the Cowboys did, what sort of latitude would it have left to negotiate an extension with Micah Parsons, who will want to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the sport?

If you need more convincing, consider this: There’s no more crying need for Dallas at the moment than defensive line. The club’s response was to pluck KJ Henry off the Cincinnati practice squad.

Does that sound like a team willing to throw money at a player who would be the No. 2 receiver, one who will turn 32 before the season is done?

“I’ve never gotten into the habit of talking about players on other teams,” said head coach Mike McCarthy, who coached Adams in Green Bay. “I don’t know if there is ever anything good that comes out of that.

“But personally, I have a tremendous love and respect for Davante. I got to see him out there in Vegas during the preseason. I don’t really know exactly what’s going on there, but once again, we do feel very confident with our receiving room.”

Adams to Dallas?

It’s not going to happen.
