Is there a chance Cowboys running back Dalvin Cook becomes active for Sunday’s game at Pittsburgh?
Ezekiel Elliott has been active the first four weeks of the season, with one start. Cook has remained on the practice squad all season.
Friday morning, coach Mike McCarthy said in a radio interview on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) that Cook took some team snaps this week in practice. But he indicated Rico Dowdle, who has started the last three games, and Elliott, need more rushing attempts.
During a conference call with reporters after the radio interview, McCarthy explained how the team keeps Cook and Elliott, two veteran players, engaged.
“I think it’s through communication,” he said. “It’s a long year [and] our approach, obviously we want to line up and win games. They’re just different from where they’re at. Dalvin came here late, he wasn’t here for camp. Zeke came back, we will be smart with him with the number of games he has played and Rico is a young establishing player and the other young guys in the room. I think part of it is the dynamics of the room, also the plan and how we’re moving accordingly. There’s a long game and a short game here.”

WR Ryan Flournoy and Elliott were listed on Thursday’s injury report as limited in practice with dehydration. McCarthy said the temperatures were in the low to mid 80s with the “heat bouncing off the Dr. Pepper [building]. It’s been hot out there the last two days.”
