Cowboys-Steelers live updates: Dallas sneaks away with win after Dak Prescott’s late TD

The Cowboys and Steelers will add another chapter to their storied rivalry on Sunday night.

A storied NFL rivalry receives a new chapter Sunday night.

The Dallas Cowboys are on the road to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5. Dallas has a few challenges to overcome in the matchup, including the absences of two top defenders in Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.

Led by quarterback Justin Fields, the Steelers will look to make the most of homefield advantage against the shorthanded Cowboys.

FINAL: Cowboys 20, Steelers 17

Fourth quarter

- 0:00 remaining: Pittsburgh gets no help from the Stanford band on their desperation lateral play, and the Cowboys steal one in Pittsburgh. Dallas wins 20-17.

Cowboys 20, Steelers 17

- 0:20 remaining: The Cowboys, somehow, have retaken the lead.

A three-turnover night is 20 seconds away from becoming a W after Dak Prescott found Jalen Tolbert in the end zone on fourth down to give Dallas the lead.

- 0:52 remaining: Huge play from fullback Hunter Luepke to take Dallas inside the five-yard line.

- 2:00 remaining: Dallas is driving at the two-minute warning, down to the Steelers’ 33-yard line. The Cowboys need a touchdown for a shot at a win.

Steelers 17, Cowboys 13

- 4:56 remaining: Pittsburgh retakes the lead with a long and penalty-aided drive for a touchdown. The Cowboys are now on the cusp of a brutal loss, with one, maybe two more chances to put the ball in the end zone.

- 10:28 remaining: Another flip of the game and another Dak Prescott interception. The Steelers can drive to take the lead.

- 11:41 remaining: Still down Tyler Guyton, now RG Zack Martin appears to be sidelined due to cramps. The Cowboys are currently rolling with an interior offensive line of Brock Hoffman, Cooper Beebe and TJ Bass for this crucial fourth-quarter drive.

- 12:50 remaining: The Dallas defense forces another punt and the offense will take over with a chance to take a two-score lead and perhaps come out of a soggy night in Pittsburgh with a win.

Cowboys 13, Steelers 10

- 13:51 remaining: The Cowboys get in the end zone for the first time tonight with a 16-play, 90-yard driving ending with Dak Prescott finding Rico Dowdle for a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Third quarter

- End of quarter: 15 minutes of mistakes for the Cowboys, with penalties adding to the blocked kick to keep Dallas stuck on six points. Dak Prescott has thrown for nearly 300 yards with not much to show for it.

That said, Dallas is driving to start the fourth and can take the lead with a touchdown.

- 8:44 remaining: Another Cowboys drive deep into Pittsburgh territory comes away with zero points. Brandon Aubrey’s 38-yard field goal attempt is blocked and recovered by the Steelers. They take back over with a chance to make this a two-score game.

- 11:50 remaining: Pittsburgh takes its first lead of the game with a 16-yard touchdown from Justin Fields to Connor Heyward.

Halftime: Cowboys 6, Steelers 3

Second quarter

- 0:56 remaining: Scratch that. Prescott instead lobs a poorly thrown pass in the direction of CeeDee Lamb which is picked off for Dak’s second turnover of the night.

An “inexcusable” throw from Prescott, Chris Collinsworth said on the broadcast.

- 2:00 remaining: After a defensive stop, the Cowboys are looking to put more points up just before the end of the half.

Dak Prescott hit Jalen Tolbert for 48 yards, the longest reception of Tolbert’s career, to put Dallas in scoring range before the two minute warning.

Cowboys 6, Steelers 3

- 8:51 remaining: The Cowboys and Brandon Aubrey tack on another field goal to give Dallas a 6-3 lead, but the Cowboys may have suffered another crucial injury as rookie left tackle Tyler Guyton went down shortly before the end of the drive with what looked like a leg injury. T.J. Bass filled in on the final play of the drive, a failed 3rd and 16.

First quarter

- End of quarter: The first quarter ends in disaster for Dallas.

Deep in Pittsburgh territory, Dak Prescott dropped back on a 3rd and 6 and was sacked by Steelers DE TJ Watt. Prescott fumbled, and Pittsburgh recovered. No points for the Cowboys, and a waste of an incredible catch by CeeDee Lamb,

- 7:33 remaining: The Steelers have answers with a 41-yard field goal of their own to tie the game at three midway through the first quarter.

- 10:47 remaining: Cowboys DE Marshawn Kneeland has gone down with what looked to be an apparent right knee injury. Dallas is already without pass rushers DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons. Losing Kneeland would be another blow to the Cowboys defensive front.

- 12:35 remaining: The Cowboys are on the board first.

After a solid 38-yard opening kickoff return by Kevontae Turpin set Dallas up with good field position, Brandon Aubrey drilled a 55-yard field goal to give Dallas a 3-0 lead.

Delay: Rain and lightning in the Pittsburgh area has pushed back kickoff for Cowboys-Steelers. Follow below for updates:

8:45 p.m. update: And we’re off. After a weather delay of roughly one hour and 25 minutes, the game is under way.

8:25 p.m. update: The NFL has announced an estimated start time for Cowboys-Steelers at 8:45 p.m. Players are returning to the field now.

8:20 p.m. update: Fans have started filing back into their seats as the rain at Acrisure Stadium has begun to let up. No official kickoff time has been announced, however. Players are expected to return to the field at 8:25.

8 p.m. update: Heavy rain and lightning have continued at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh as of 8 p.m. The players have returned to the locker rooms and fans have been told to take cover in the stadium concourse. Still no announcement from the NFL on a kickoff time.

- Running backs: For the first time this season, Dallas is keeping just two active running backs on its roster for the matchup vs. Pittsburgh. Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle will lead the way for the Cowboys’ struggling run game with Deuce Vaughn inactive.

- Weather watch: Pittsburgh is under a thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. this evening. Storms could pop up throughout the evening. There’s a 55% chance of rain in Pittsburgh starting at 7:15.

- Micah Parsons officially out; Cowboys missing cornerback help: The Cowboys have announced their inactives prior to kickoff against the Steelers. Micah Parsons is officially out with his high-ankle sprain; CB Caelen Carson is also inactive. Other inactives include Trey Lance, Deuce Vaughn, Matt Waletzko, John Stephens and KJ Henry.
