What did Troy Aikman have to say about ‘frustrated’ Jerry Jones radio outburst?

Aikman won three Super Bowls with Jones while leading the Cowboys offense from 1989–2000.

It may be a bye week for the Dallas Cowboys on the field, but that hasn’t kept the organization from making headlines anyway.

Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones caused a national stir on Tuesday during a weekly radio interview, a conversation that featured numerous interruptions and the potential firing of show hosts.

During a reoccurring spot of his own on the airwaves, Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Troy Aikman ripped CeeDee Lamb and the Cowboys wide receivers for their performance so far this season.

During the same interview on Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket (KTCK-AM), Aikman was asked if he was surprised by the Jones outburst earlier in the week given their history together?

“Yes and no,” Aikman said. “Yes from the standpoint that I think he’s always been really good [with media]. I do know that Jerry can get pretty upset. You know, he does have a temper, but he does a good job, I think, over the years of really restraining it, especially when he’s dealing with the public or out in public.

“But to me, the reaction by him is more an indication of what he’s feeling and what’s going on inside of him and how frustrated that he is.”

The main point of contention from the Jones interview with “Shan & RJ” on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) stemmed from a conversation about Dallas’ lack of moves over the offseason, as well as the underwhelming performance of the roster the Cowboys had in place following the offseason’s “all in” declaration from the general manager.

“I think maybe there was an overestimate of some of these younger players, of what they might be able to do, because that’s what the public was told was that there were some young players that they had drafted, that they had invested in, that they needed to develop, and they felt good about them and they were going to be the ones who step in and, you know, I guess, answer a lot of those questions,” Aikman said.

“It just simply has not happened. The concerns coming into the season are the same concerns we’re having right now after six games.”

Aikman was also critical of the decisions to sign Lamb so far into camp, for all the practice time he missed, as well as the signing Dak Prescott right before the season opener in Cleveland.

“I thought that was going to maybe play out through the season,” Aikman said. “But to sign [Prescott] right on the eve of the opener, it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense as far as what that might have been able to do then to free up some cap space and make some moves [during the offseason]. And I think all of that’s coming back, and it’s coming back on Jerry.”
