FRISCO — One of the many comments Jerry Jones made in his latest radio appearance is that the Cowboys need to explore whether or not the coaching staff is instituting bad concepts and plays.

“I don’t really have one,’’ the Cowboys head coach said. “I talk to Jerry all the time. We have time to go through self-scout, so I didn’t see the comments specifically. I don’t think we have bad concepts and bad plays.
“I’ll go back and check.’’
McCarthy was smiling at that point of his answer.
The owner’s comments came earlier this week in one of his regularly scheduled appearances on 105.3 The Fan. Jones was shifting the conversation from a defense of why the Cowboys didn’t pursue free agent running back Derrick Henry in the offseason to saying the club needed to look within.
“Are we designing bad plays, are we designing bad concepts?” Jones asked. “The facts are, there is some of that.
“Some of execution. Some of talent.’’
Jones proceeded from that point to say he likes the talent assembled.
McCarthy has been through this before. He knows he’ll be asked to address the comments Jones makes on the team’s flagship station or to reporters after home games. He knows there are even more pointed questions asked in the wake of a 38-point home loss.
And he knows all this takes on even more weight when he’s in the final year of his contract.
“We’re not where we want to be,’’ McCarthy acknowledged. “It ultimately is my responsibility.
“I’m fully aware of that.’’
