Do Cowboys need to make trade deadline deal? Jerry Jones responds to Michael Irvin claim

The Hall of Fame receiver recently said Dallas needed to make a trade in the worst way: ‘It’s bad right now.’

The NFL trade deadline is four days away.

The Dallas Cowboys are 3-4 with multiple holes on their roster.

It would stand to reason that a deadline deal would be in the works. Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin agrees.

Irvin said in an interview on Monday that the Cowboys “have to do something” before the Nov. 5 deadline.

Does the team’s general manager agree?

Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones made his Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) where he made it clear in no uncertain terms: He still has a great deal of optimism with this team and with the 2024 season, citing QB Dak Prescott and head coach Mike McCarthy and how he’s “seen them do it.”

“I have seen the players out on the field do what I’m talking about doing,” Jones told The Fan. “[Things that would] address turnovers, or address having your communication [errors] in your offensive line, or improving your running game, improving protection. I have seen Dak make the kind of plays that would cause us to have a different turnover ratio, for instance. ...

“I know the caliber of coach Mike McCarthy is. He’s one of the highest-rated, highest-winning percentage coaches in the NFL. And he’s won a Super Bowl. So when you’ve seen it done in the NFL you know they can do it. That gives you reason to say what I say, and that is that we can get better.”

Jones was then asked about the team’s struggles and if he agrees with Irvin’s assessment that a trade is needed in the worst way.

“Listen, first of all, let me talk about Michael. It’s no secret but for those who haven’t heard me say it: Mike’s probably one of my favorite people that I’ve had in my life. Much less as a player. And so when Michael talks, I listen. For instance, it was about six or seven years ago that Michael passionately, publicly said: ‘Jerry, pay [Ezekiel Elliott]. Pay him. He’s the heart and soul, he’s what the team is built around. Pay Zeke. Pay him what he’s asking.’

“So, I’m smiling when I say that. But the point is: At a given time, we’ve all had that goal. I’ve had it, I’ve done it. Some [trades] work, some of them don’t as well. Obviously, just to make a trade — I know Michael would like for us to upgrade with that trade, not just make a trade to be trading. So having said that, if I see something — let me tell you something, we’ve been doing this hard for a long time. But boy, we look for all meat-on-bone out here that can improve our team.”
