FRISCO – Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has a partial avulsion of his right hamstring tendon, a person with knowledge of the injury told The Dallas Morning News.
Team officials are trying to determine if Prescott needs surgery for the portion of the tendon that has torn from the bone or if it can heal on its own. If surgery is necessary, Prescott’s season would end.
The initial diagnosis has Prescott missing multiple weeks, but the quarterback is getting additional opinions to determine the severity of the hamstring tear.
That’s the main reason the Cowboys haven’t placed Prescott on injured reserve, which would cost him a minimum of four games.
“That has not been made,” coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday when asked about Prescott’s possible move to IR.
Prescott suffered the injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Atlanta. Prescott said he pulled his hamstring on a scramble. He thought the leg would get better but after attempting a pass a few plays later he felt it again.
He did not return for the fourth quarter.
Prescott has been on the injured list just once in his career when he fractured his leg in the 2020 season. Prescott fractured his thumb on his throwing hand in 2022 but wasn’t placed on injured reserve. He missed five games and the Cowboys went 4-1 without him as Cooper Rush started.
The Cowboys are hopeful that pass rusher Micah Parsons and cornerback DaRon Bland can return to the field for this week’s game against the Eagles.
Parsons has missed the last four games with a high ankle sprain.
He was a limited participant on Wednesday’s injury report.
“You know my chance is high but we just trying to see how the practice week goes,” Parsons said, “see where the challenges are at, seeing what measures we got to take to see how we want to play this game.”
Bland hasn’t played all season as he recovers from a fracture in his foot suffered in August.
While Bland is not on injured reserve, team officials remain confident about a return. After undergoing surgery in late August, he was expected to miss eight to 10 weeks. After six weeks, he was moving well in rehab work, which gave the team confidence he might return.
But he encountered soreness in his foot which slowed his progress.
Linebacker Eric Kendricks (shoulder), guard Zack Martin (shoulder), safety Juanyeh Thomas and linebacker Nick Vigil (foot) didn’t practice Wednesday.
Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (shoulder), cornerback Trevon Diggs (calf) and tackle Tyler Guyton (neck/shoulder) were limited in practice.
