Dallas Fuel mutually parts ways with assistant coach ‘Vol’Jin’

The departure of the assistant coach starts a busy offseason for the Fuel.

The Dallas Fuel announced the Overwatch League team mutually parted ways with assistant coach Kang “Vol’Jin” Min-Gyu Thursday afternoon.

The move started what promises to be an active offseason for a Fuel team that went 9-11 in an underwhelming 2020 season. Kang was with the Fuel for three seasons, starting with the team in 2018 for OWL’s inaugural season.

The assistant coach was a cog for Dallas this season while the Fuel parted ways with its head coach, an assistant coach and best player. Kang and interim head coach Kim "Yong' Yong-Jin absorbed the responsibilities of ex-Fuel head coach Aaron “Aero” Atkins and Louis “Tikatee” Lebel-Wong.

“(Kang) definitely had to do a lot because it was basically just him and Yong, so they had to deal with what they had," Fuel support player William “Crimzo” Hernandez told The Dallas Morning News in a phone interview Thursday afternoon. “He had to kick it into the next gear for the latter half of the season and he did pretty well for what he was given.”

Hernandez added that Kang offered a nice balance alongside Kim, who was known as being a stern and serious head coach. Kang was more light-hearted, but still focused on the task at hand.

Envy Gaming owner and Chief Gaming Officer Mike Rufail has hinted at massive personnel changes with the Fuel after the organization’s third lackluster season despite hefty expectations.

Dallas will see more changes in the coaching staff — the team could see as many as three new additions to the coaching staff currently.

The team knew that heading into the offseason, Hernandez said, making the move with Vol’Jin not a shocking one.

“Honestly, we didn’t know this happening," Hernandez said. "But expected changes are coming through with the team so it’s not exactly surprising.”

'The roster will likely have massive adjustments, too, and players will have much to prove going forward.
