Dallas Fuel sign main support player ‘ChiYo’ for 2022 Overwatch League esports season

“ChiYo” won an Overwatch Contenders Korea championship with O2 Blast earlier in October.

The Dallas Fuel have made their first offseason acquisition by signing 18-year-old main support player Han “ChiYo” Hyeonseok Wednesday, Fuel general manager Mat “TazMo” Taylor told The Dallas Morning News.

The team’s official announcement followed shortly on Twitter Wednesday.

ChiYo recently flexed his Overwatch League potential in an Overwatch Contenders Korea championship with O2 Blast, winning the $65,000 prize. Han will replace former Fuel player Lee “Jecse” Seungsoo in the Dallas lineup.

“We expect him to bolster our roster, both on his mechanics and his willingness to learn and hopefully mold with the team really well,” Taylor said. “As far as I’ve heard, the players already like him. We’re interested in how that whole thing develops. We want to foster that culture like we always do.”

The Fuel were looking at Han for a while, and kept tabs on O2 Blast’s success even during the OWL season. Dallas’ focus was still on their own schedule, but they were always in the hunt for new stars.

Dallas head coach Yun “RUSH” Heewon told The News earlier in the offseason that he was looking for younger talent he could develop. He wants constant progression as the Fuel chase an OWL title after a podium finish last season.

Main tank player Lee “Fearless” Euiseok, 23, is the most tenured Overwatch player with Dallas now. There is a pattern to that.

“If you look at our roster for the most part, it’s a really young team,” Taylor said. “Fearless is our oldest player at 23, but he’s here because he’s already worked under RUSH. It’s always good to have a developmental process and RUSH has a certain style that has proven good results.”

This shouldn’t be the last move the Fuel make this offseason. Dallas is still in the market for a hitscan player, and Yun said earlier in the offseason that the Fuel would consider any role if the talent was impressive.

Taylor added that the Fuel players already like Han. That makes him a quality piece to complete the starting lineup.
