Complete 2022 FIFA World Cup groups: United States, Mexico to face familiar foes

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled for Nov. 21-Dec. 18 in Qatar.

Update:
This story will be updated with more information and reaction.

Familiar opponents await the top teams of Concacaf in the 2022 FIFA men’s World Cup in Qatar.

The United States was drawn into Group B with England, Iran and either Wales, Scotland or Ukraine.

Mexico was drawn into Group C with Argentina, Poland and Saudi Arabia.

Though the draw was Friday, there are still three spots still up for grabs. Inter-continental playoffs, and the final European spot that was postponed because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will be determined in June. Costa Rica, which finished fourth in Concacaf’s final round, will play New Zealand in Qatar. Australia and UAE will also play in Qatar this summer, the winner facing Peru a few days later.

A number of FC Dallas players -- both past and present -- are expected to fight for spots on the U.S. roster, including current FCD attackers Paul Arriola and Jesus Ferreira.

The United States, which failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, should be favored to reach the knockout stage for third time since 2010. The U.S. and England were also grouped together in 2010, with the two teams drawing 1-1 and the Americans topping the group after a dramatic late-game winner against Algeria. Iran beat U.S. 2-1 in the 1998 group stage.

Mexico, a mainstay in the World Cup, hasn’t progressed past the Round of 16 since 1986, including seven straight losses in the knockout round. Argentina defeated Mexico 3-1 in the 2010 Round of 16.
