FC Dallas signs Sebastian Lletget to new three-year contract

“I want to help this club become one of the best, and I truly believe that we will,” Lletget said.

Sebastian Lletget debuted for FC Dallas before he’d even seen the club’s training facilities in Frisco, but now North Texas is home for the veteran midfielder.

After joining FCD in a midseason trade, Lletget signed a new contract with the club for three years (on a TAM deal) with an additional club option year, the team announced Monday.

“I trust what is being built here and I want to be a huge part of it,” Lletget said in a news release. “I want to help this club become one of the best, and I truly believe that we will. This is the start of an exciting time,”

Lletget was set to stay at the club for another season but now is a building block for the long-term, with the club holding an option to keep him in North Texas through the 2026 season.

The long-time LA Galaxy midfielder made a move last offseason to join former manager Bruce Arena in New England. But his time with the Revolution didn’t go as hoped, as he struggled to find consistency.

FCD moved for Lletget at the trade deadline, and Lletget was a quick fit. The midifelder provided a link between FCD’s strong defense and a quality attacking trio that sometimes wasn’t seeing enough of the ball.

Now, he’ll be able to continue to expand on that role on the field as he also makes himself at home in DFW.

“Signing a new contract here at FC Dallas means the world to me and my family,” Lletget said. “Since the moment I touched down in Dallas, the fans, the staff, my teammates have all just welcomed me with open arms.”

The 30-year-old already had a strong relationship with FCD manager Nico Estévez, who he worked with when Estévez was an assistant with the U.S. men’s national team.

“He’s adapted well because the work he was doing in U.S. national team camps is similar in a lot of aspects,” Estévez said during the season. “He knows the league, so we knew it would be easy when it came to integrate him with the group.”

Now it will be part of Lletget’s job to help new arrivals as one of the team’s veteran leaders, hoping to help the club add to its trophy case and win a first-ever MLS Cup.
