As the Rick Carlisle era comes to an end in Dallas, here’s a look at his coaching tree after 19 seasons as an NBA coach

Carlisle informed the Mavs that he will not return as Dallas’ coach next season.

Thursday afternoon, Rick Carlisle informed Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban he will not be returning as the team’s head coach next season — bringing his 13-year tenure in Dallas to an end (a franchise record).

Carlisle has been an NBA coach for 19 seasons, compiling a record of 836-689 and winning an NBA title with the Mavericks in 2011.

He started his head coaching career in 2001-02 with the Detroit Pistons and spent two years there before coaching the Indiana Pacers for four seasons. He became the Mavericks’ coach on May 9, 2008 and was 555-478 in 13 seasons in Dallas.

Brown had some high-profile head coaching jobs after spending two years as Carlisle’s assistant in Indiana. His most notable job was coaching LeBron James in Cleveland, where they teamed up to reach the NBA Finals in 2007 in James’ fourth season in the league. Brown had two different coaching stints with the Cavaliers, amassing a record of 305-187, and he was 42-29 in 71 games coaching the Los Angeles Lakers over parts of two seasons.

He was in Dallas for three years as an assistant before spending the last 10 years as the head coach for the Toronto Raptors (seven years) and Detroit Pistons (three years). He was fired in Toronto after a franchise-record 59 wins in the 2018-19 season. He is 81-139 as the Pistons’ coach, including 20-52 this past season. That was the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

After spending four years as an assistant coach for the Mavericks, Stotts had nine successful seasons as the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. His record of 402-318 made him the second-winningest coach in franchise history. He took Portland to the Western Conference finals in 2019, but the Blazers lost in the first round of the playoffs in four of the last five seasons, and the team and Stotts mutually agreed to part ways on June 4.

The son of former NBA player and coach Paul Silas was the Mavericks’ top assistant for two years before earning his first NBA head coaching job with the Houston Rockets last season. It has not gone well so far, as the Rockets had the NBA’s worst record, at 17-55.
