Luka Doncic teams up with 2K Foundations, dedicates 2 basketball courts to his hometown in Slovenia

The Mavericks star continues his year of giving back by investing back into the community that raised him.

Whether on the court or off of it, Luka Doncic doesn’t miss a chance to drop an assist.

Partnering up with 2K Foundations, the philanthropic arm of 2K, the Mavericks guard and NBA 2K22 cover star unveiled a project in his hometown of Ljubljana, Slovenia: refurbishing his childhood court — complete with new seating, lighting and, of course, Doncic’s logo.

The new court is adorned with a design of Doncic’s own, created with the help of graphic designer Nejc Prah.

“This is a very exciting day for me. I have great memories growing up in Ljubljana. These are my childhood courts where I learned and practiced the game,” Doncic said. “It’s an honor to be able to give back to my city and to my country that gave me so much and that I love. The opportunity for kids to play on the same courts and pursue the same dreams I had is something I am excited about.”

During the unveiling, Doncic signed the court to officially dedicate it to his hometown. Local children were then invited to participate in basketball scrimmages, 3-on-3 games, dribble clinics and skills challenges.

Of course, Doncic wanted to make sure the courts remained available for the local community to use. Who knows, maybe another Slovenian super star will soon be headed to the NBA because of it.

“Having Luka return to his hometown and dedicate these courts to his childhood town is such an honor. He continues to represent Slovenia globally, and we’re proud of what he has done for our country, not only at the Olympics but his efforts in the NBA,” said Zoran Janković, Mayor of the City of Ljubljana. “He loves Ljubljana, and the city and country love him.”

This isn’t the first time Doncic has given back. Earlier this year, Doncic teamed up with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, CEO Cynt Marshal, and teammates Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell to donate $1.25 million to the Dallas Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund and to several local organizations helping to shelter and re-house families and homeless and low-income people in response to Dallas severe winter storm.

A month later, he donated 100 pairs of Jordan 1s to the UT Southwestern healthcare staff, to show his appreciation for everything they had done, and continue to do, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
