Mavericks GM Nico Harrison joined the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] to discuss Christian Wood’s play, Jaden Hardy’s playing time and Josh Green’s improvement.
Here are highlights of the conversation edited for clarity:
Did you expect Christian Wood to play this well?
Nico Harrison: “The thing I thought was that Christian hadn’t had a chance to play meaningful basketball on a winning team in his career. It’s just unfortunate. There’s several players in the league that that have played on a losing team.
“It’s a contract year, so he’s going to be the best version of himself. I knew he’s a good offensive player. I didn’t know that he would necessarily score as much as he has. Thus far the stats are pretty, pretty comparable to what they were last year in Houston that that I thought offensively you probably wouldn’t score as much. But that he would be more efficient.”
Are you aware of the fans’ frustration with Wood not closing out games?
Harrison: “Yeah, I get it. Here’s the thing I tell everybody when it comes to who starts the game. To me, that’s a feel thing that’s really like the feel of the team. And that’s more of how other people play. And I think that’s just the feel to me. It’s like getting your minutes.
“However you get your minutes throughout the game, as long as you’re getting minutes, that’s the most important thing. And then really, who ends the game is usually who’s playing the best at that time. And so that’s going to depict that’s going to vary from game to game.”
How much has Josh Green improved this year?
Harrison: “Yeah, he had such a great summer. Michael Finley says, he’s the MVP of the summer. And he really, he really was. It was a really big summer for him. And he attacked it and he got better.
“He’s shooting the ball with confidence. He always brought energy. But he also would make mistakes on offense, and now he’s not making mistakes. He’s bringing energy, shooting the ball with confidence. He’s just great to be around the energy that he’s bringing to our team is on both offense and defense has been great.”
What would it take to see Jaden Hardy playing in the NBA?
Harrison: “You know, Hardy’s, been great. I think I think we’re gonna we’re gonna see him over the next probably week. I think you’re gonna see Hardy getting some playing time.
“He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do in the G league. And so I think you’ll see him getting some playing time here shortly.”
