Mavericks add ex-Jazz assistant Alex Jensen to Jason Kidd’s coaching staff

Jensen helped develop All-Star center Rudy Gobert into a three-time Defensive Player of the Year honoree.

The Mavericks have filled one of their assistant-coach openings.

After a decade with the Utah Jazz, Alex Jensen has agreed to join head coach Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas, a person familiar with the move said Tuesday.

Dallas needed to replace three spots after the departures of lead offensive assistant Greg St. Jean and assistant Quinton Crawford (who landed on the new Phoenix Suns staff) and shooting coach Peter Patton (who joined the Chicago Bulls).

In Jensen, the Mavericks will welcome a veteran assistant whose longevity in Utah spanned multiple promotions and coaching changes.

A former University of Utah star, Jensen started with the Jazz under Tyrone Corbin’s leadership in 2013 and rose to become former coach Quin Snyder’s top assistant. He remained on current coach Will Hardy’s staff last season, but Hardy opted not to retain Jensen at the end of the regular season.

Perhaps most notably during his Utah tenure, Jensen helped develop All-Star center Rudy Gobert into a three-time Defensive Player of the Year honoree. The Mavericks just drafted first-round rookie Dereck Lively II with the hope he can become a similar rim protector and all-around defensive threat.

Jensen, 47, has also been involved with coaching the German national team and in the USA Basketball system.
