Mavericks reportedly fill out coaching staff, add Bryan Gates and Josh Broghamer

News of Gates and Broghamer’s arrivals broke a few hours after that of veteran Utah Jazz assistant Alex Jensen’s addition Tuesday.

Update:
This post has been updated with the reported hiring of ex-Cavaliers assistant Josh Broghamer.

The Mavericks 2023-24 coaching staff is reportedly complete.

Longtime NBA assistant Bryan Gates has agreed to join head coach Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas, a person familiar with the decision said Tuesday. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, former Cavaliers assistant Josh Broghamer will also be among the new coaches to join the Mavericks.

News of Gates and Broghamer’s arrivals broke a few hours after that of veteran Utah Jazz assistant Alex Jensen’s addition Tuesday.

The moves fill three voids that Kidd’s staff faced this offseason.

After their tumble out of playoff contention last spring, the Mavericks parted with shooting coach Peter Patton (who joined the Chicago Bulls) and lead offensive assistant Greg St. Jean and assistant Quinton Crawford (who landed on the new Phoenix Suns staff).

Call it an assistant swap?

Gates spent the last two seasons in Phoenix under head coach Monty Williams and helped the team emerge as one of the Western Conference’s best annual contenders with Devin Booker, Chris Paul and, after last season’s trade deadline, Kevin Durant.

He also became a first-hand witness to the Mavericks’ most exciting, dominant moment of Luka Doncic’s first five seasons: Game 7 in the second round of the 2022 postseason when Doncic led an onslaught road upset over the Suns to advance to the conference finals.

An Anchorage, Alaska, native, Gates has also worked as an NBA assistant in Sacramento (2009-10 and 2016-19), New Orleans (2010-15) and Minnesota (2015-16 and 2019-21).

This won’t be the first time Broghamer has worked on a Kidd-led coaching staff. Broghamer was a video coordinator and assistant under Kidd throughout his stint in Milwaukee.

Broghamer was recently the Cavaliers’ player development coach and was set to lead Cleveland’s Summer League roster in Las Vegas this month.
