Who are the Dallas Mavericks’ assistant coaches? Meet Jason Kidd’s staff

Kidd’s staff is full of former NBA players and experienced coaches.

During the Dallas Mavericks’ run to the NBA Finals, head coach Jason Kidd has garnered a lot of the credit for his work on the bench.

However, he didn’t coach the the team to the Finals by himself. Kidd’s staff is full of former NBA players and experienced coaches.

Here’s a breakdown of Kidd’s coaching staff.

Darrell Armstrong

Armstrong, the longest-tenured coach on staff, is in his 10th season as an assistant. He played 14 years in the NBA, spending time with the Mavs, Magic, Hornets, Pacers and Nets. In 1999, Armstrong won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, as well the league’s Most Improved Player Award.

Josh Broghamer

Broghamer joined the Mavericks’ staff in August 2023 after working with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2018-23. He previously worked with Kidd as a video coordinator and assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Jared Dudley

After finishing his playing career, Dudley transitioned into an assistant coach role immediately, joining Kidd’s before the 2021-22 season. Dudley spent the last two seasons of his 14-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers under then-assistant coach Kidd. Dudley won a title with the Lakers in 2020. Over his 14-season NBA career, Dudley also played for Charlotte, Phoenix, the LA Clippers, Milwaukee, Washington and Brooklyn. He averaged 7.3 points and shot 39% from three for his career.

New Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick was interested in adding Dudley to his new staff, but Dudley elected to stay in Dallas.

“It’s not the time. For one, there’s unfinished business. For two, you gotta wait for the right opportunity. I’m not leaving Dallas. My family loves it here,” Dudley said. “That right opportunity hasn’t come yet for me to go. I always tell people that I’m in no rush. It’s not like I’m going anywhere for the money. I made a lot of money as a player so my whole thing is I’d rather be a year or two behind and take the right job and stay here.”

Eric Hughes

Hughes joined Kidd’s staff ahead of the 2023-24 season. He was an assistant on the Philadelphia 76ers’ from 2020-23 and previously held coaching roles in Milwaukee, Brooklyn and Toronto.

Alex Jensen

Jensen joined the Mavericks’ staff in July 2023 after spending 10 years as an assistant with the Utah Jazz. Jensen helped develop All-Star center Rudy Gobert into a three-time Defensive Player of the Year honoree.

Marko Milic

Milic joined the Mavericks’ staff ahead of the 2022-23 season after spending time with the Basketball Federation of Slovenia. Milic became the first Slovenian player to be selected in the NBA draft when the 76ers picked him in 1997. He played two years with the Suns before transitioning back overseas. Milic also has a long history with fellow Slovenian Luka Doncic.

God Shammgod

Shammgod has spent the last three years on the Mavericks’ staff. Before joining the Mavericks’ staff, he served as a player development coach at Providence College from 2012-15. He was selected by the Wizards in the second round of the 1997 NBA draft. He appeared in 20 games with Washington before playing professionally both domestically and overseas. Shammgod is a longtime friend of Kyrie Irving’s father, Drederick; and godfather, Rod Strickland.

Sean Sweeney

Sweeney spent three seasons as an assistant with the Pistons before joining Kidd’s staff in Dallas ahead of the 2021-22 season. He also worked with Kidd during his past coaching stops in Milwaukee and Brooklyn. During the Mavericks’ run to the Western Conference finals in 2022, Sweeney was Kidd’s defensive czar.

Sweeney was also interviewed for the Detroit Pistons’ head coaching vacancy this offseason.

Keith Veney

Veney is in his first season on the Kidd’s staff. He joined the Mavericks from the Shot Doc Shooting Academy, which he started to train NBA and WNBA players. He played five seasons overseas in France, Iceland, Israel, Poland and the Dominican Republic. He holds the NCAA record the most 3-pointers in a game (15) and the most in a game by a freshman.
