Mavericks’ Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving celebrate Father’s Day a little early with their dads

Sasa Doncic and Drederick Irving were courtside for the Mavericks’ win over the Boston Celtics in Game 4.

The Dallas Mavericks celebrated Father’s Day a little early this year.

Following their 122-84 win over the Boston Celtics in Game 4, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving celebrated on the court with their fathers.

Doncic embraced his father, Sasa Doncic, after the game, as he has many times throughout the Mavericks’ playoff run. Irving also had a moment with his father, Drederick Irving.

The proud parents also had a moment to celebrate with each other. They shared a handshake and a laugh after the win.

“It was a very special moment,” said Luka Doncic when asked about the embrace Sunday. “I think they are very proud of their sons. So they are happy that we’re happy on the court together.”

Sasa Doncic and Drederick Irving both have basketball backgrounds.

Sasa was an accomplished basketball player in his own right, playing power forward for professional teams in Slovenia, Serbia and France. His teams won Slovenian Premier A League titles in 2007 and 2008. Drederick played basketball at Boston University prior to playing professionally in Australia, where Kyrie was born.

Kyrie Irving told The Dallas Morning News last year that his father is his “biggest fan” and “one of my harshest critics.” Earlier this month, Irving honored his father by signing him as his first signature athlete to his ANTA shoe line.

Doncic and Irving, of course, are fathers themselves. Doncic became a parent late last year when he and his fiancée Anamaria Goltes announced the birth of their daughter, Gabriela.

“It’s been the best thing in my life,” Doncic said.

Doncic and Irving hope the Father’s Day celebration will extend into next week, as the Mavericks look to stave off elimination again against the Celtics in Game 5 on Monday.
