The Dallas Mavericks season has come to an end.
As abrupt as a loss in the NBA Finals may be, the basketball world doesn’t stop. The NBA draft is only a couple weeks away, and free agency whirlwinds loom right behind.
Where do the Mavericks stand as they hope to repeat as Western Conference champions? Can general manager Nico Harrison find an extra piece or two to get Dallas back to a championship level?
Here’s a look at how the roster stands in-house heading into free agency (contract figures via Spotrac):
Players not under contract
Derrick Jones Jr.
Position: Forward Age: 25
2023 stats: 8.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists
He defended at an All-NBA level this season (even if he wasn’t eligible for the postseason honor due to a technicality). Jones, who finished the season as the full-time starting small forward in Dallas, often owned the responsibility of limiting the opposing team’s best perimeter scorer, including guarding Jayson Tatum in the NBA Finals. He could become a key focus for the Mavericks this offseason to bring back.
Markieff Morris
Position: Forward Age: 34
2023 stats: 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.2 assists
A veteran of the game, Morris didn’t see the floor as much as his teammates. That doesn’t mean his presence did not have a tremendous impact this season. Will Dallas have the finances available to keep him around?
Greg Brown III
Position: Forward Age: 22
2023 stats: 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.7 assists
Brown, a Dallas native and former UT Longhorn only appeared in six games with the Mavericks this season, all in the month of January.
Brandon Williams
Position: Guard Age: 24
2023 stats: 3.2 points, 0.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists
Williams appeared in 17 games for the Mavericks. He scored 22 points, his season-high, in the regular-season-ending loss to Oklahoma City.
