It’s a familiar setup for Sweeney, who spent three seasons in Detroit as an assistant on Dwane Casey’s coaching staff before joining Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas in 2021. Sweeney plays a pivotal role in the transformation of the Mavericks’ offensive and defensive schemes. He helped lead the Mavericks to their third NBA Finals appearance, along with assistant coach Jared Dudley — who is reportedly a target to join JJ Redick’s new coaching staff in Los Angeles.

The news comes one day after the Pistons dismissed former head coach Monty Williams after just one season. Detroit finished with a league-worst record of 14-68.
