Mavericks majority owner Miriam Adelson donates $1 million to pro-Ted Cruz super PAC

The Truth and Courage PAC devoted to reelecting U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, filed its monthly campaign finance report Thursday.

Miriam Adelson, casino magnate and majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, donated $1 million to the Truth and Courage PAC, a political committee devoted to reelecting U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. This is according to its monthly campaign finance report filed Thursday.

Adelson recently acquired a controlling interest in the Dallas Mavericks. The Tel Aviv-born physician is the widow of Sheldon Adelson and the largest shareholder of the Las Vegas Sands, considered one of the biggest casino operators in the world. She is worth $33.8 billion, according to Bloomberg’s billionaire index, ranking her in the top 50 richest people in the world.

She has called for U.S. support of Israel, including during a December appearance in Austin where she said Texas leaders must work together with Israel to combat Hamas.

Cruz has been an outspoken defender of Israel and its handling of the war against Hamas. He faces U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, in November in what is expected to be among the most expensive Senate races.

Adelson is one of the most prolific Republican donors. According to Reuters, Adelson and her husband, who died in 2021, gave more than $218 million, the most of anyone, to Republican and conservative causes during the 2020 U.S. election cycle. In this year’s presidential election cycle, Adelson will be the lead financier of The Preserve America super PAC, created to support presidential candidate Donald Trump. According to the Republican strategist leading the group, the super PAC aims to raise $100 million this cycle.

Adelson has also spent generously to support gambling in Texas. Adelson has donated more than $4 million to lawmakers like Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan and Rep. John Kuempel, who are in favor of gambling legalization, according to Transparency USA, an organization that collects data on political contributions. She spent another $1 million to support Gov. Greg Abbott’s reelection campaign in 2022.

Recently, her company, Sands, backed a petition to legalize gambling by the Texas Destination Resort Alliance, which was established and paid for by Sands in 2021, according to its website.
