Dallas Mavericks agree to three-year deal with free agent F Naji Marshall, reports say

Marshall spent the last four seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The NBA free agency ball is rolling for the Dallas Mavericks.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Mavericks agreed to a three-year, $27 million deal with forward Naji Marshall. It was the first move Dallas made in the negotiating period, which started at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Marshall had been mentioned as a possible target for Dallas if the team couldn’t re-sign 2023-24 starter Derrick Jones Jr. Marshall spent the last four seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans, averaging 7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists last season.

The 6-7 forward entered the NBA in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Xavier. He averages 7.5 points, 2.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds for his professional career. Marshall is a prototypical 3-and-D wing who excelled as a catch-and-shoot 3-point threat in 2023-24.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks pivoted to signing Marshall as they pursued a sign-and-trade for four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson.

Stein added that Dallas is still focused on securing a commitment from Thompson. The Mavs reportedly still had hope they could keep Jones while landing Thompson early on Sunday.

General manager Nico Harrison described re-signing Jones as “priority 1A and 1B” this offseason. Jones had played a pivotal role in Dallas’ successful run toward the NBA Finals, stepping up with strong defending as a starter.
