This comes just two days after star guard Luka Doncic sustained a left calf contusion during workouts and missed practice, though the Mavericks have said they aren’t concerned about the long-term implications of Doncic’s injury.

Exum played in 55 games with the Mavericks last season after signing a multiyear deal with Dallas, coming from time spent playing overseas with Serbia’s Partizan Belgrade. Exum was a valuable piece off the Mavericks’ bench for a large portion of the season, averaging 7.8 points and 2.9 assists in 19.8 minutes played per game.

The Mavericks signed a pair of guards during the offseason in Spencer Dinwiddie and Quentin Grimes who add to their bench depth. Returning guard Jaden Hardy could also see an increase in expected playing time should Exum have to miss an extended period.

Dallas plays its first preseason game on Monday. Its regular-season opener against the San Antonio Spurs will tip off on Oct. 24.
