Oklahoma Sooners to start Frisco Emerson’s Michael Hawkins Jr. vs. Auburn, per report

Head coach Brent Venables announced the change on Monday night.

The Oklahoma Sooners are making a change to their starting quarterback.

On Monday night, head coach Brent Venables announced that the Frisco Emerson graduate freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. will start the team’s game at Auburn on Saturday afternoon.

Hawkins came on at QB for Denton Guyer graduate Jackson Arnold after the Sooners dug themselves a 19-3 deficit and looked inept on offense. Hawkins wasn’t able to muster much on the night, throwing for one touchdown, 132 yards and rushing for 22 yards. However, Hawkins is a dual-threat QB, unlike Arnold and gives the struggling Sooners offense a running threat from their signal caller.

Oklahoma would go on to lose their SEC opener vs. Tennessee 25-15 in Norman.

Hawkins was a four-star recruit coming out of Emerson and chose the Sooners over offers from TCU, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Texas Tech and others. He transferred to Emerson from Allen after racist vandalism at his family’s home.

If Hawkins impresses at Auburn on Saturday, he’ll have a chance to start Oct. 12 when he comes back to North Texas for the annual Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
