Brent Venables announces Oklahoma will go back to Jackson Arnold at QB vs. No. 18 Ole Miss

Arnold, a Denton Guyer product, started the Sooners’ first four games but was benched for Michael Hawkins Jr. against Tennessee.

Amid a disastrous start to SEC play, Oklahoma is going back to square one.

On the same day the Sooners fired offensive coordinator Seth Littrell, Brent Venables also announced at his weekly coaches show that Jackson Arnold will again be the team’s starting quarterback.

Arnold, a sophomore Denton Guyer product, started Oklahoma’s first four games, but was benched in the Sooners’ loss to Tennessee. Frisco Emerson product and true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. took his place and started the following three games against Auburn, Texas and South Carolina.

Hawkins was benched for Arnold after he committed three turnovers on Oklahoma’s first three possessions of the game against South Carolina. The Gamecocks went on to embarrass the Sooners in Norman, taking a 24-0 first half lead, and cruised to a 35-9 win.

Oklahoma’s offense has been a mess this season and Venables didn’t hold back when discussing the offensive ineptitude.

“It’s completely unacceptable and embarrassing,” Venables said. “Why are we historically not where we’re supposed to be? Maybe it provides a spark. There will be real change. There’s got to be accountability.”

Oklahoma and Mississippit kick off at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oxford, Miss. on ESPN.
