Gabby Thomas holds off Sha’Carri Richardson to win 200m at Outdoor Championships

Richardson, a Carter alum, won the 100-meter title Friday.

Sha’Carri Richardson’s streak of top finishes ended Sunday evening after placing second in the women’s 200-meter final at the USATF Outdoor Championships.

The 23-year-old Carter alum was in first after the first 100 meters but finished in 21.94 seconds and lost to Gabby Thomas, who ran in 21.60 seconds.

It was still a quality weekend for Richardson two years after having a national title stripped because of a doping violation. She won the women’s 100 meters on Friday and qualified for Sunday with a first-place finish in the 200-meter prelims.

The 26-year-old Thomas skipped the 100 to conserve her energy for the 200. She finished eighth at nationals last season as she dealt with a hamstring injury.

“It felt really good,” Thomas said of her race.

Richardson accomplished precisely what she wanted to at nationals — qualify in both sprint events for worlds next month in Budapest, Hungary.Two years ago, Richardson had her national title in the 100 stripped after she tested positive for marijuana.
