Joshua Edwards, super heavyweight boxer from Texas, loses in opening round of Olympics

Going into the Olympics, Edwards said he’s “something the super heavyweight division has never seen.”

PARIS – Top-seeded Joshua Edwards, the Pan-Am gold medalist and first Houston super heavyweight to qualify for the Olympics since George Foreman, made a quick exit from Paris on Monday, losing to Italy’s Diego Lenzi in a split decision.

Going into the Olympics, Edwards, 6-3, 212, said he’s “something the super heavyweight division has never seen,” but Lenzi didn’t appear to have any trouble figuring him out.

According to the Houston Chronicle, after Edwards was deducted a point for failing to keep his head up in the second round, he told his corner, “I’m tired.”

The 6-1, 246-pound “Italian Stallion” – yes – was simply too strong for Edwards, attempting to become the first U.S. super heavyweight to win an Olympic gold medal since Tyrell Biggs in 1984.
